What Is Sublimation Printing?
Sublimation printing involves transferring dye onto fabric (usually polyester) using heat. It’s ideal for bold, full-color designs because the ink turns into gas and bonds directly with the fabric. However, traditional sublimation struggles on dark fabrics, which is why we need a few extra steps to make your designs pop.
Why Sublimating on Dark Shirts Is Challenging
Unlike light-colored fabrics where sublimation ink is visible, dark fabrics absorb the ink, making designs practically disappear. The trick to sublimating on dark shirts involves creating a bright surface where the colors will stand out.
The Best Methods to Sublimate on Dark Shirts
1. Sublimate on White Sublimation Transfer Vinyl
Using white sublimation vinyl is one of the best methods for sublimating on dark shirts:
Step 1: Design your artwork using software like Cricut, Silhouette or Canva. Then print it out.
Step 2: Cut your design from white heat-transfer vinyl using a cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette.
Step 3: Press the vinyl onto your dark shirt using a heat press.
Step 4: Sublimate your printed design onto the white vinyl.
Why this works: The white vinyl provides a light, visible surface for the sublimation ink, making your colors vivid against the dark background.
2. Use White or Rainbow White Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl (MY FAV)
For a more unique look, consider using glitter heat transfer vinyl:
Step 1: Print your design onto sublimation paper.
Step 2: Apply the glitter vinyl to your dark shirt with a heat press.
Step 3: Sublimate the design onto the glitter surface.
Why this works: Glitter vinyl not only reflects light but also adds a textured, eye-catching finish to your designs.
3. 100% NO FAIL Sublimate on 100% light colored Polyester
You can also use 100% polyester fabric as an alternative:
Step 1: Print your design.
Step 2: Cut around it design and heat-press it onto the light or white shirt.
Why this works: The 100% polyester fabric allows the sublimation ink to bond with the material, resulting in vibrant and durable prints. Not just sit on top of it like screen printing or heat transfer vinyl.
Tips for Sublimating on Dark Shirts
1. Pre-Press Your Shirt
Pre-pressing your shirt for about 5–10 seconds removes moisture and wrinkles, ensuring a smoother application.
2. Use the Right Heat and Pressure Settings
Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for heat and pressure settings. Most sublimation processes require around 385°F for 60 seconds, but this varies depending on the materials used.
3. Test Before Printing
Test your designs on a small piece of fabric before committing to the full shirt. This can save you from wasting materials.
4. Stick to Bold Designs
For best results, opt for bold, simple designs that are more likely to stand out on the dark fabric. Detailed or intricate designs may lose their clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Can I just sublimate on 100% Polyester dark shirts?
No, the sublimation print won’t show up on dark fabrics. You’ll need sublimation vinyl or another suitable method for dark shirts.
2. Do I need a special printer for sublimation?
Yes, you need a sublimation printer with sublimation ink, specifically designed for this process.
3. Can I sublimate on cotton?
Sublimation works best on 65% polyester blend or higher, but you can use sublimation vinyl or white glitter vinyl to sublimate on cotton fabrics.
4. How long does a sublimation design last on a dark shirt?
With proper care, sublimation designs on vinyl can last for years. Always wash your shirts inside-out and avoid high-heat drying.
5. Is sublimation more durable than screen printing?
Both are durable, but sublimation tends to last longer, especially on polyester fabrics since the ink bonds with the fibers. Screen prints, depending on the quality, but WILL crack over time.
6. Can I layer sublimation prints?
You shouldn't need to as your print should have everything you need. But if your design is split, yes layering is possible. I would press all the vinyl first to just be cautious about over-heating or damaging the layers. Then sublimate last.
